Biological correlates of sea urchin recruitment in kelp forest and urchin barren habitats

چکیده

Shifts between the alternate stable states of sea urchin barren grounds and kelp forests correspond to density. In Aleutian Archipelago, green urchins Strongylocentrotus polyacanthus are dominant herbivores that graze forests. Sea recruitment is an important driver influences density, particularly in absence top-down control from a keystone predator such as otter Enhydra lutris . To understand how biological community may influence patterns recruitment, we compared recruit (size ≤20 mm) densities with biomass other benthic organisms both ground forest habitats at 9 islands across Archipelago. Patterns structure 2 did not explain recruits; however, same 10 specific taxa were found correlate recruits each habitat. Taxa showed strong positive correlations included Codium, Constantinea, Schizymenia, hydrozoans, while negative observed Pachyarthron Pugettia Weak Alcyonidium ascidiaceans habitats, weak variable relationships detected Polysiphonia Corallina habitats. The species-specific be due small displacement by larger conspecifics, larval responses settlement cues, post-settlement survival via biogenic refugia, or potentially predation. These potential interactions apparent, regardless habitat, it can inferred they would preserved presence

Sea urchin recruitment patterns and implications of commercial fishing.

Coexisting sea urchins Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and S. franciscanus exhibit different recruitment patterns. Juveniles of the former species are found in a variety of habitats, whereas juveniles of the latter occur almost exclusively under the spine canopy of conspecific adults. The commercial harvest of S. franciscanus thus seems to affect nursery grounds as well as the reproductive potent...

Sea Urchin Recruitment: Effect of Substrate Selection on Juvenile Distribution

Intertidal field observations have shown that juvenile purple sea urchins Strongylocentwtus purpuratus are found in higher densities near adults . The same is true for subtidal populations of juvenile red sea urchins 5. franciscanus. These distribution patterns could be influenced by any of three elements: substrate selection, early juvenile mortality or juvenile migration. Using laboratory-rea...

Sea urchin feeding fronts

Sea urchin feeding fronts are a striking example of spatial pattern formation in an ecological system. If it is assumed that urchins are asocial, and that they move randomly, then the formation of these dense fronts is an apparent paradox. The key lies in observations that urchins move further in areas where their algal food is less plentiful. This naturally leads to the accumulation of urchins...

Eutacticity in sea urchin evolution.

An eutactic star, in a n-dimensional space, is a set of N vectors which can be viewed as the projection of N orthogonal vectors in a N-dimensional space. By adequately associating a star of vectors to a particular sea urchin, we propose that a measure of the eutacticity of the star constitutes a measure of the regularity of the sea urchin. Then, we study changes of regularity (eutacticity) in a...

Micromechanics of Sea Urchin Spines

The endoskeletal structure of the Sea Urchin, Centrostephanus rodgersii, has numerous long spines whose known functions include locomotion, sensing, and protection against predators. These spines have a remarkable internal microstructure and are made of single-crystal calcite. A finite-element model of the spine's unique porous structure, based on micro-computed tomography (microCT) and incorpo...
